James Thompson, Sheriff of Los Angeles

James Thomson Portrait James P Thompson, known as "Don Santiago", was born in New Hampshire in 1821 and died on May 12th 1895 at 74 years of age. His career included being Sheriff of Los Angeles, a road builder, a sheep rancher and a jail warden. He was an experienced ranchero whe he obtained a five year lease to half of Rancho La Brea in 1852. The adobe occupied by Thompson still stands near the Farmers Market at Third Street and Fairfax Ave. in Los Angeles.
