James and Manuela Thompson Manuela de al Ossa married James Thompson in March 1851 and they came to live at the rancho after 1860. Tompson's mother in law, the widowed Rita de la Ossa, conveyed Rancho Los Encinos to him on September 10th 1862. Manuela died in 1868. leaving three children, aged 10, 7 and 6. Thompson sold the Rancho the following year and remarried. Several lawsuits were field over the division of the ranch between Rita and Tompson, which no doubt put great strain on the family.
